The families of 3 civilians who were killed in firing by CRPF personnel at Gelmon near Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district on April 7 have decided to conduct the last rites after keeping the bodies in the mortuary for 17 days in protest.
The deceased have been identified as Laishram Jiten, Wahengbam Boby, and Huidrom Henry alias Michael. Their bodies had remained at the mortuary of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, as family members refused to claim them, demanding justice and accountability over the incident.
According to reports, the firing occurred when local residents were staging a protest over the killing of two sibling children, who were allegedly killed after a projectile exploded while they were sleeping with their mother in the early hours.
Today morning, family members reached the RIMS mortuary and began arrangements to take the bodies for the final rites. The funeral is scheduled to be held at Lamthabung under Phougakchao Ikhai Police Station in Bishnupur district.
The incident had triggered widespread outrage across the state, with continued demands from the bereaved families and local residents seeking action and accountability in connection with the firing.
