Sorokhaibam Sanjoy, president of the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation, on Thursday warned of serious consequences, including the possibility of civil unrest, if authorities fail to contain the ongoing violence and ensure protection of civilians in the state.
Speaking to reporters during a torch rally held at Khumbong in Imphal West district on Thursday evening, Sanjoy criticised central security forces, alleging that they have remained passive during attacks on civilians, including incidents involving farmers in cultivation fields. He demanded the withdrawal of central forces from Manipur, stating that people would take responsibility for protecting their land and communities.
The rally at Khumbong Bazar, under Konthoujam Assembly Constituency, saw the participation of hundreds of women. The protest was supported by several civil society organisations, including Committee on Human Rights, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, All Manipur Women Voluntary Association, Poirei Leimarol Apunba Lup, and Meitei Students’ Federation.
Meanwhile, a separate torch rally was organised in Kakching district by Keirak Apunba Meira. The march began from Keirak Keithel ground and proceeded towards National Highway-137A, drawing a large number of women participants.
The Kakching rally condemned the April 7 bomb blast at Tronglaobi that killed two minor siblings, as well as the subsequent deaths of three civilians during protests, allegedly in firing by personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force.
Protesters raised slogans demanding justice for the victims, including calls such as “Implement NRC” and “No Justice, No Peace,” reflecting growing anger among participants. The rally concluded at Keirak Keithel Community Hall, where floral tributes were paid to photographs of the deceased.
