Imphal, Jan 4: The Election Commission set the campaign expenses limit per candidate at between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 28 lakh in the five states where assembly polls will be held during February to March this year.
Announcing the limit, Nasim Zaidi said: “In Goa and Manipur the limit on election expenses per candidate is Rs 20 lakh.”
“In Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand the election expenses limit per candidate is Rs 28 lakh,” the CEC said.
On the other hand, the demonetisation of high value Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes has severely hit the Assembly elections in five states.
Announcing the poll schedule for five poll-bound states today, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said his office will monitor the election expenditure closely in order to check any possible inflow of black money.
“There will be strict expenditure monitoring mechanism to curb black money during the election,” Zaidi told reporters in New Delhi.
“All expenses above Rs 20,000 have to be out of bank accounts to be set up by candidates and the payment has to be through cheques,” he added.
Zaidi further said that all kiosks in favour of a candidate will be deemed to be set up by the candidates only and will be included in their election expenditure.
