The Extra-Judicial Execution Victim Families Association Manipur (EEVFAM) marked its 15th Foundation Day with an appeal to end the militarization of youths and combat ethnic polarization in the state.
The event took place at the Manipur Press Club in Majorkhul today. In her address, EEVFAM President Renu Takhellambam highlighted the dangers posed by the militarization of youth in response to ongoing conflicts. She voiced concerns over the fear instilled in those who had previously struggled against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), noting the alarming rise in weaponization among the youth. She called for immediate measures to dismantle these militarization efforts.
The gathering commemorated EEVFAM’s 15-year journey as a women-led organization advocating for justice against fake encounter killings attributed to AFSPA. The event was attended by prominent figures, including All Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL) Advisor Anandi Khangembam, who served as the Chief Guest, and Resource Persons Dr. Noni Arambam of D.M. University, Ningombam Shreema of Nambol Sanoi College, and Dr. Sapam Dilip of Manipur University.
Chief Guest Anandi Khangembam in her speech discussed the critical role women in the fight against AFSPA and lauded EEVFAM’s progress in seeking justice for fake encounter cases. She expressed her disappointment with the central government’s inaction regarding Manipur’s current situation, urging officials to address the issues before they escalate further.
