DESAM today appealed the state government to set up an immediate water policy to solve water scarcity problem in the state.
Addressing a press meet today at the office of DESAM, Keishampat, Moirangthem Angamba, President, DESAM said that water scarcity became more serious this year in the state; even operation at JNIMS hospital got postponed due to water scarcity. He said the state government sanctioned crore of Rupees to Public health engineering department (PHED), Minor irrigation department (MID) and Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) for the development of water supply and irrigation system of the state. On top of the funds being sanctioned by the state government there are various other schemes and policies taken up to solve the issue of water scarcity, added Angamba. But the state faces water scarcity even though the state receives maximum amount of water rainfall everywhere. He said the government should establish a monitoring committee to inquire if the budget being sanctioned is utilised in proper way. He further appealed the state government to initiate an immediate plan of action to solve the water scarcity faced by the state; to set up legislation to preserve community ponds and wetland area, to create a water harvesting policy and to launch an environment literacy campaign.
