Delhi Police have registered an FIR against Congress MP and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual harassment, following a complaint lodged by the university’s Chief Security Officer.
According to agency report, the FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station on October 11 under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police said the investigation was underway, with further details awaited.
Media reports said at least 11 female students had lodged sexual harassment complaints against Prof. Bimol Akoijam in May. The complainants allegedly accused him of inviting them to his campus residence on the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempting to sexually harass them.
Bimol Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency in the Lok Sabha, has been named in the FIR. Reports also stated that he had been dismissed from his teaching position at JNU.
The allegations are under investigation. The registration of an FIR does not establish guilt, which must be determined through due legal process.
