Imphal, May 25:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya are likely to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rainfall expected on May 27. This is due to Cyclone Remal, which is anticipated to hit Sagar Islands in West Bengal and the adjacent Khepupara region in Bangladesh early on May 26.
The IMD reported on Friday that a depression over the East Central Bay of Bengal moved north-northeastward at 15 km/hr over the past six hours, intensifying into a deep depression by 5:30 am this morning. It is expected to become a cyclonic storm over the East Central and North Bay of Bengal by this evening and will continue moving northwards.
Cyclone Remal is likely to make landfall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and the Khepupara region in Bangladesh around midnight on May 26 as a severe cyclonic storm, with wind speeds of 110 to 120 km/hr, gusting up to 135 km/hr.
The IMD has also issued a storm surge warning, predicting a surge of about 1 meter above the astronomical tide to inundate low-lying areas of coastal West Bengal, and a surge of 3 to 4 meters above the astronomical tide for coastal Bangladesh at the time of landfall.
This is the first cyclone in the Bay of Bengal for this pre-monsoon season. In response, school buildings in three coastal districts of West Bengal have been designated as cyclone shelters, district control rooms have been activated, emergency services are on standby, and advisories have been issued to ports in Kolkata and Paradip in Odisha.
