Imphal, Feb 14:
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Manipur State Committee has strongly criticized the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, stating that it is not a solution to the ongoing crisis but rather an indication of the failure of the BJP-led double-engine government.
In a statement, CPI(M) State Secretary Kshetrimayum Santa asserted that the decision to impose President’s Rule was not made in the interest of Manipur, but rather to buy time to resolve internal conflicts within the BJP and its ruling coalition. He alleged that Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who had been backed by the BJP-RSS despite his controversial role, was forced to resign after evidence of his partisan approach was presented in court, leaving him with no option but to step down.
Santa further criticized the central leadership of the BJP, stating that both the party and the central government failed to take necessary action to address the suffering of the people. He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s refusal to visit Manipur during the crisis reflected the sectarian and politically motivated approach of the ruling party, which, according to him, prioritized its own political interests over the welfare of the people.
He maintained that President’s Rule would not solve the crisis, but now that it had been imposed, the central government could no longer evade responsibility. He urged the government to immediately initiate measures to heal divisions by engaging in negotiations with representatives of different communities. He also called for the involvement of all political parties to work towards just solutions that restore peace and normalcy while safeguarding democratic rights.
CPI(M) further demanded that elections be held within a specific time frame to ensure that the people of Manipur regain their right to an elected government.
