Congress moves NHRC over “Collapse of Human Rights” in Manipur

A delegation of the Indian National Congress from Manipur today approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in New Delhi, alleging continuing human rights violations in the state and demanding immediate intervention over abductions, economic blockade and shortage of essential supplies.
The delegation, led by Congress Legislature Party leader Keisham Meghachandra Singh, submitted a detailed complaint before NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian and held discussions on what the party described as a worsening humanitarian and governance crisis in Manipur.
The Congress leaders alleged that the state government had failed to protect civilians and restore normalcy amid ongoing incidents involving abduction of civilians, economic blockade on national highways and disruption of essential supplies, including LPG cooking gas, medicines and food items.
The complaint specifically highlighted the alleged abduction of six Naga and fourteen Kuki civilians and accused the authorities of failing to secure their release despite the passage of several weeks.
The Congress delegation demanded that the NHRC direct the Manipur Government to publicly disclose within 24 hours the status and whereabouts of the abducted persons. It also sought immediate directions to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to ensure safe rescue of the victims, register FIRs and arrest all those involved in the abductions.
The party further demanded action taken reports on the ongoing economic blockade and shortages of essential commodities caused by disruptions along national highways.
The delegation also sought accountability from the police regarding arrests made, FIRs registered and measures taken to restore free movement of goods and essential services in the state.
Apart from Meghachandra Singh, the delegation included N. Bupenda Meitei, Wahidur Rahman, Sakir Ahmed, A. Oken Singh, Toijam Lokendro Singh, Sanjita Lisham and Youth Congress leader L. Piyari Devi.
