Imphal, Nov 19:
Congress General Secretary for Communications, Jairam Ramesh, led a delegation from Manipur in a meeting with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to address the ongoing political and humanitarian crisis in the state. The delegation included AICC In-charge for Manipur Girish Chodankar, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Meghachandra Singh, Member of Parliament from Manipur Inner Bimol Akoijam, NECC Chairman Nabamtuki A.P., and AICC Executive Member for Law, RTI, and Human Rights Bupenda Meitei.
In a post shared on the social media platform ‘X,’ Ramesh detailed a recent development in Manipur’s political landscape. He reported that a meeting called by the Chief Minister of Manipur with all NDA MLAs in Imphal had poor attendance, with only 26 members showing up. Of these, four were from the National People’s Party (NPP), whose National President has already informed the BJP National President of their withdrawal of support for the current Chief Minister. Ramesh criticized the situation, emphasizing that the political turmoil in the state was worsening, and questioned whether the Union Home Minister, who he believes is managing the state’s affairs on behalf of the Prime Minister, was fully aware of the crisis. Ramesh also expressed deep concern over the prolonged suffering of the people of Manipur and called into question how much longer the crisis would persist.
Congress MP from Inner Manipur, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who was part of the delegation, also voiced his concerns. He described the situation in the state as dire and criticized the government’s neglect of Manipur. “The situation is bad. The manner in which the government has neglected the state and failed to take decisive action could have worsened the situation,” Bimol Akoijam said. He added that the presence of two Army divisions and thousands of Central Armed Police forces was not the issue; rather, it was the lack of political will and sincerity from the Government of India. “What is missing is not the troops, but the political will and sincerity,” he stressed.
Bimol Akoijam, acknowledging the role of the opposition, vowed to continue pressing the government for action. “As an opposition, we have to keep voicing our concerns and pushing the government to do the right thing,” he said. The Congress MP also mentioned that the party president would raise the matter with the President of India, and he pledged to bring up the situation in Parliament, highlighting the suffering of the people in Manipur over the past 18 months. “I will do my best to communicate the tragedy the people of Manipur have been enduring,” Bimol Akoijam added.
