Imphal, Nov 29:
The Community Network for Empowerment (CoNE) has officially launched International Testing Week 2024 (ITW 2024), a global campaign designed to increase access to critical health services for vulnerable populations. Running from November 29 to December 5, the initiative will be observed across 51 countries, including India. This year’s focus is on raising awareness and offering testing for viral infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV.
CoNE has partnered with the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program (NVHCP) to provide free Hepatitis B and C testing throughout the week. Dr. Rosie Rajkumari, Nodal Officer of NVHCP, highlighted the program’s commitment to offering a range of services from screening and diagnosis to vaccination and treatment. “Our primary goal is to ensure that individuals who test positive have access to timely and effective treatment, ultimately reducing the burden of viral hepatitis in the region,” she said. Testing and treatment services will be available at various government hospital sites at no cost.
In addition, CoNE has joined forces with the Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) and Meitei Leimarol Sinai Sang (MLSS) to provide free HIV testing at five key locations across Manipur. The screenings will be conducted confidentially, targeting individuals who are at higher risk for these infections.
During a press conference, Dr. Rosie Rajkumari, along with RK Nalinikanta, President of CoNE, and RK Komoljit Singh, Secretary of CoNE, unveiled a poster aimed at raising awareness about Hepatitis B and C. The poster will be displayed in government hospitals and NGOs working in the fields of HIV and drug treatment.
The designated screening locations for the campaign include the Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT) Center at RIMS, various Drug Treatment Centers funded by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and facilities serving nurses and sanitary workers at JNIMS.
This year’s observance of International Testing Week is particularly significant as it aligns with CoNE’s ongoing efforts to promote early detection, treatment, and prevention of viral infections, with a special focus on marginalized and vulnerable communities who often face barriers to accessing healthcare services. RK Nalinikanta, President of CoNE, expressed gratitude for the support of NVHCP, MSACS, and other partners. “By working together, we aim to dismantle barriers to testing and offer a pathway for early intervention,” he said.
CoNE and its partners encourage the community, media, and public health advocates to join the campaign and help spread awareness about the importance of regular testing for HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C. By coming together, they hope to empower individuals to take control of their health and contribute to a more informed and healthier society.
