Commemorative Board Installed at Mount Manipur in South Andaman

The Egalitarian Manipur of the Altruists Trust, a registered organisation based in Manipur, installed a commemorative board of historical significance at Mount Manipur in South Andaman to highlight the shared legacy of courage and sacrifice linking Manipur and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The commemorative board, bearing the theme “Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Manipur: Separated by Distance but Connected Through History of Courage and Sacrifice”, was formally inaugurated during a solemn ceremony held at Mount Manipur on 06 January 2026. The inauguration was carried out by Aswin J. Parihar, Indian Forest Service, Divisional Forest Officer of South Andaman, who attended the function as the chief guest. Rajshekhar, Logistics Manager of Experience Andamans Tours Private Limited, a leading tour operator in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, was also present at the event.
The installation of the board is part of the ongoing programme titled “Cultural and Youth Development through Revisiting the Unsung Heroes of Manipur of Historical Significance” undertaken by the EMA Trust. The initiative aims to revive and promote the historical connection between Manipur and the Andamans, with particular focus on the 23 unsung war heroes of Manipur who were exiled by the British to the penal settlement at Mount Manipur, formerly known as Mount Harriet, following the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. The Trust stated that the commemorative board honours these heroes and seeks to preserve heritage, enhance historical awareness, and inspire future generations with values of courage, patriotism, and selfless service to the nation. The board also highlights the role played by Manipur in India’s freedom struggle, in recognition of which the Government of India renamed Mount Harriet as Mount Manipur in October 2021.
Addressing the gathering, Aswin J. Parihar appreciated the initiative taken by the EMA Trust and stressed the importance of preserving historical landmarks while ensuring environmental conservation of forest and heritage sites. He observed that such initiatives play an important role in educating visitors and future generations about the historical relevance of Mount Manipur. Rajshekhar stated that initiatives of this nature would contribute positively to the promotion of tourism at the historical site.
Members and representatives of the EMA Trust expressed gratitude to the Andaman and Nicobar Administration for its cooperation and support in facilitating the installation of the commemorative board.
