Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and Wangkhem MLA Keisham Meghachandra has launched a free tractor ploughing initiative for farmers in parts of Thoubal district.
The initiative was undertaken in Charangpat area, where ploughing work commenced in different agricultural fields using tractors. The programme began from Charangpat Maklang and is being carried out in phases across multiple paddy fields.
Speaking on the occasion, Meghachandra said the initiative aims to support farmers who have been facing hardships over the past few years due to various challenges, including economic distress. He stated that around 35 acres of paddy fields are being covered under the programme.
He added that the free ploughing is being carried out under the Command Area Development Programme to assist farmers who are unable to afford mechanised farming due to financial constraints and other difficulties.
The MLA informed that after completing work in Charangpat Maklang, the next phase would be taken up in nearby localities. He noted that while it may not be possible to cover all fields, the effort is intended to provide timely support to as many farmers as possible and reduce their financial burden.
Farmers expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating that the free ploughing support comes at a crucial time when many are facing economic challenges since May 2023.
They also urged other elected representatives to undertake similar initiatives to assist farmers during difficult times.
