New Delhi / Imphal, April 12:
In a major move to restore peace and stability in conflict-hit Manipur, the Central Government has deputed a record 16 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from the 2024 batch to the state. This marks the highest-ever single-year posting of IPS officers to Manipur, underscoring the Centre’s resolve to tackle the ongoing crisis with reinforced administrative strength.
As per the latest data from the Ministry of Home Affairs published by India TV, this unprecedented deployment comes under the cadre allocation process of the Civil Services Examination 2023. Among all states and union territories, Manipur has received the highest number of IPS officers this year.
The decision comes against the backdrop of ethnic tensions and sporadic violence that have persisted in Manipur since May 2023. The infusion of fresh officers is expected to bolster the state’s policing infrastructure, particularly in vulnerable and conflict-prone zones.
A senior official from the Ministry remarked, “This historic posting reflects the Centre’s deep commitment to restoring normalcy in Manipur. These young officers will be instrumental in rebuilding trust, ensuring effective governance, and maintaining law and order.”
Local communities and civil society groups have welcomed the move, viewing it as a much-needed step toward long-term peacebuilding. The officers will be deployed across key districts, with a focus on community engagement, conflict resolution, and enhanced intelligence coordination.
Notably, the scale of this year’s deployment stands in stark contrast to previous years. According to report in 2018 no officers were deputed, in 2019, 2 officers were deputed, in 2020, 1 officer was deputed and in 2021, 3 officers were deputed.
Officials noted that the decision is a strategic effort to strengthen the administrative machinery and improve on-ground policing in a state that has faced prolonged unrest in recent months.
With law enforcement being a cornerstone of stability, the move signals a determined push by the Centre to address one of India’s most pressing internal security challenges.
