Imphal, Aug 18:
A ten-day comprehensive vocational training programme on “Processing and Value Addition of Banana Pseudostem Fibres” was conducted from August 5-16, 2024, organized by the Department of Textile and Apparel Designing, College of Community Science, Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Tura, Meghalaya. The program was initiated under the ICAR-NINFET, Kolkata-funded project “Strengthening Livelihood Opportunities of Farmers of Garo Hills in Meghalaya Through Processing and Value Addition of Non-Conventional Fibres.” The introductory session of the program was inaugurated by Dr. Jyoti V. Vastrad, Organizer and Dean, who focused on the encouraging scope of banana pseudostem fibre use for better value addition.
These were supplemented with numerous specialized sessions by experts in Textile and Apparel Designing. That hopefully delivered in-depth insights and practical knowledge during the course of training. The course also contained sessions on vermicomposting using plant material residue from fibre extraction.
The valedictory function was held on August 17, 2024, where Minha Riyaz Khan, Project Lead of Prime Rural (PSREF) Government of Meghalaya, distributed the certificates to the participants and motivated them to take up entrepreneurship with continuous support from Prime Rural for the benefit of the participants. With an abundance of banana crop in the state, there exist tremendous opportunities for fibre extraction and value addition. This infrastructure of fibre extraction within the College would, therefore, act as a central unit to benefit farmers locally.
