BJP spokesperson defends CM’s peace initiative, backs Guwahati talks

In an exclusive interaction with Imphal Times, BJP Manipur Pradesh spokesperson Laimayum Bashanta Sharma defended Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand’s peace initiative, describing it as a necessary political step to address the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur.
Laimayum Bashanta stated that Manipur’s ethnic divisions, rooted in historical developments since its merger with India in 1949, require sustained dialogue rather than confrontation. He referred to official estimates indicating that violence since May 2023 has resulted in over 260 deaths and the displacement of around 60,000 people.
According to him, the Chief Minister’s outreach efforts have been misunderstood by sections on all sides. While some view dialogue as a compromise, others interpret it as weakness. Laimayum Bashanta maintained that continued instability has already caused serious economic setbacks, affecting key sectors such as agriculture and tourism.
He also pointed to recent clashes in Tengnoupal and Litan as signs of the fragile situation on the ground. Recalling earlier peace efforts, Laimayum Bashanta noted that post-1997 engagements between community leaders, civil society organisations, and church groups had helped maintain relative stability for years, suggesting that dialogue remains the most practical solution.
Addressing concerns over reported pressure on Kuki legislators willing to participate in talks, Laimayum Bashanta said such actions hinder the peace process and undermine democratic engagement.
On the decision to hold talks in Guwahati, Laimayum Bashanta explained that current security conditions make it difficult for representatives of different communities to meet safely within Manipur. He described the meeting as an important first step toward rebuilding trust between communities.
Reiterating the Chief Minister’s “forgive and forget” approach, Laimayum Bashanta said reconciliation would take time but must begin somewhere. “The fact that representatives from different sides have agreed to meet is itself a positive development,” he said.
Laimayum Bashanta also raised concerns about national security, referring to recent developments involving foreign nationals allegedly linked to insurgent activities along the India-Myanmar border. He warned that external interference could further complicate the situation.
He acknowledged the role of Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, noting that a series of all-party meetings since January 2026 has aimed to build broader political consensus.
Calling for public support, Laimayum Bashanta said the Chief Minister’s efforts are intended to represent all communities in the state. He urged citizens to support dialogue and avoid actions that could deepen divisions.
“Manipur is at a critical stage. The path forward lies in dialogue, cooperation, and collective responsibility,” Laimayum Bashanta said, adding that peace and stability are essential for the state’s recovery.
