Leaders and workers of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), led by MPCC President and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, today marched from the MPCC office to Lok Bhavan to meet the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla.
The Congress delegation submitted a memorandum to the Governor condemning the alleged unlawful and arbitrary detention of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and several senior Congress leaders by the Delhi Police during a peaceful protest in New Delhi.
According to the memorandum, Rahul Gandhi was detained on Tuesday while leading a peaceful demonstration near the Prime Minister’s residence along with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other party leaders. The protest was organised to demand accountability over alleged examination paper leaks and testing irregularities, while also expressing solidarity with students protesting against what the Congress termed the BJP-led government’s failure to protect their future.
The MPCC strongly condemned the detention, describing it as “undemocratic and unlawful.” On behalf of Congress workers, students, youths and the people of Manipur, the party demanded immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, holding him morally accountable for the alleged examination irregularities.
The memorandum also demanded a full discussion in Parliament on the examination paper leak issue and the government’s failure to safeguard the future of students. Further the MPCC demanded immediate withdrawal of all FIRs registered against students in connection with the Delhi protests and also urgent measures to “Save Manipur,” while addressing the concerns of the people of the state.
