Imphal, March 24:
Despite BJP MLAs publicly denying any internal differences, signs of division have emerged within the party in Manipur as some legislators have indirectly criticized former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the 1st Khuraijam Ranjana Devi Memorial Invitation Men’s Volleyball Tournament 2025 at Yumnam Huidrom, MLA Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei made veiled attacks on the former leader without directly naming him. He claimed that intimidation of common men and women had significantly decreased after February 9—the day Biren Singh tendered his resignation as Chief Minister.
Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei further alleged that the former leader facilitated the creation of a large number of Aadhaar cards to influence elections in Chandel and Tengnoupal districts. He questioned the previous administration’s stance on illegal immigration, stating, “He talked about illegal immigrants, but how could an unexpected number of Aadhaar cards be issued and people enrolled in the voter list?” Rameshwor was referring last election where Letpao Haokip won from Tengnoupal Ac and Ollis won from Chandel. Both are close associate of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.
The MLA also criticized the former CM’s environmental policies, alleging that while he spoke of protecting forests, his own associates were involved in trading forest products.
The tournament’s opening ceremony at Yaihithel Lampak, Yumnam Huidrom, Thiyam Leishangkhong was attended by prominent BJP MLAs, including Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Loken Khuraijam, and Janghemlung Panmei, along with office bearers of the All Manipur Volleyball Association. The event was organized by The Social Welfare Club under the aegis of the All Manipur Volleyball Association.
Amid the apparent discord within the party, Rameshwor assured that efforts were underway to form a new government. He expressed optimism that “by the grace of God, we will soon have a leader who can serve all people equally.”
The remarks come at a time when the state assembly is put under suspended animation following Biren Singh’s resignation.
