Biramangol College students ransack college Principal room; block road

Imphal, Sept 14: State Education department failure to intervene the prolong crises in the selection of Secretary of the Governing Body of Biramangol College has prompted the students to engage in violent protest. Students of the College besides vandalizing the college property had blocked the Imphal-Ukhrul road since today afternoon drawing the attention of the state government concern authority.
A large number of students of the College today gathered inside the college campus at around 11 am and staged a rally till Chingarel Army Post under Sawombung Police station demanding a regular principal as well as immediate resumption of classes. However when they return back to the college the main gate of the college was found locked by a team of police under the directives of the college authority. Rage over the attitude some of the student turned wild and destroyed the lock.
The students then throng to the office room of the principal room and ransacked it. The irate students also pull out the desk and benches from the class rooms and vandalized at the college premises. In order to control the situation, policemen who were present there fired a round of tear gas shell.
Later, the irate students came out at the street and then staged a sit-in-protest in front of the college and prevented all sort of vehicular movement at the area along Imphal-Ukhrul road.
Speaking to media persons general secretary of Biramangal Students’ Union, L Dhaneshor Devi said that after the election of governing body of the College was held in the month of May this year, tussle started among the governing body for selection of general secretary of the governing body had stranded all the functioning of the college including conducting classes. As the conflict among the GB reached to the law court college affairs has been left without any administration. The care-taker Principal, Ch Chonjon too seems to have no power at the situation.
The student leader further added that the matter has been put to the notice of the Education Minister M Okendro and a memorandum was submitted to bring a solution to the matter and also for appointment of a regular principal on or before September 13. She said the memorandum was submitted on September 9 and as no action has been taken up till today.
The demand of the students’ Union is also supported by the teachers’ association of the college. President of the Association Th Ibemu said that their salary for 1 year has still not been cleared. And as a result many of the teachers are facing toughest time as the price of all essential commodities has been sky rocketed. As a result many of them could not attend classes. She said that unless the governing body of the college started function there is no way that they get their salary.
It may be mentioned that the Governing Body of the college consist of 11 members including 2 from the college teacher, 1 from the directorate of Education (U), 2 from the Manipur University, 2 from the Guardian, 2 from the local Educationist, 1 from among the doners and the Principal of the college.
