Imphal, Aug 3:
The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) is all set for a series of democratic agitations, including boycotting government programs, if the government fails to take visible action against the police personnel who assaulted a journalist on duty in at Akampat in Imphal East district. Both media bodies have submitted a memorandum demanding action within 48 hours, with the deadline ending today at 7 PM.
The journalist community was shocked when AMWJU member and Impact TV reporter Mutum Rameshchandra (popularly known as RC Mangang) was physically assaulted by a sub-inspector while covering an event at Akampat in Imphal East on Thursday. The police officer not only destroyed RC Mangang’s cell phone but also kicked him in the chest.
Outraged by the attack on the fourth estate, AMWJU and EGM members gathered at the Manipur Press Club despite the drizzling rain. They marched towards the Chief Minister’s office, carrying placards with slogan condemning the assault. In the memorandum submitted, the Chief Minister assured them that action would be taken against the police personnel involved. However, as of now, no visible action has been observed.
In response, a special general body meeting of the EGM and AMWJU was held today, resolving to proceed with a series of agitations, including the boycott of government programs. The AMWJU and EGM have already begun boycotting police news following the incident.
The journalist community awaits the government’s response as the ultimatum deadline approaches, standing firm in their demand for justice and accountability.
