Assam Police has claimed arrest of a member of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in a joint operation, the Assam Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The cadre is a wanted militant linked to the 2021 ambush on an army convoy in Manipur, report Guwahati based . The militant, a member of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), was apprehended in Assam’s Hojai district and will be interrogated by both the NIA and Assam Police regarding his role in the attack.
The ambush occurred on November 13, 2021, around 11 a.m. near the Myanmar border in Manipur’s Churachandpur district. The attack targeted a convoy of the 46 Assam Rifles, killing seven people, including Colonel Viplab Tripathi, the commanding officer, along with his wife, son, and four soldiers.
The convoy was returning from a forward camp when militants launched the deadly assault.
Reports suggest that at least 10 heavily armed militants from the PLA and Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF) orchestrated the attack, using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and gunfire. Following the ambush, security forces launched multiple operations to track down those responsible.
In 2022, another militant from the MNPF was arrested in connection with the incident. The NIA took over the investigation at the request of the then Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, aiming to dismantle the network behind the attack.
