Imphal, July 22:
The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), the Manipur Hill Journalists’ Union (MHJU), and the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) have submitted a memorandum to the Security Advisor to the Chief Minister of Manipur, urging an immediate and effective investigation into the threats and intimidations faced by media personnel and to provide security cover for journalists in the state.
“We are writing to express our grave concern regarding the recent attacks on media personnel in Manipur, particularly the assault on Editor Khoirom Loiya and others. The increasing threats and violence against media professionals pose a significant threat to press freedom and the democratic fabric of our society,” the memorandum said, citing the recent violent attack on the residence of Naharolgi Thoudang newspaper’s Khoirom Loiya and intimidations faced by various media persons working in the state.
It should be noted that unknown armed miscreants fired several rounds of gunshots at the gate of Khoirom Loiya’s residence on July 16 around midnight. The memorandum submitted by AMWJU, MHJU, and EGM demands an immediate investigation into the matter by identifying the perpetrators and bringing them to justice swiftly. It also urges for the enhancement of security coverage for media houses and journalists operating in the Imphal area to ensure that media professionals can work without fear of violence or intimidation. The journalists’ fraternity also recommends the implementation of protective measures, such as surveillance systems around media offices and the residences of journalists, to deter potential threats.
