The All Manipur Students’ Union has expressed serious concern over the condition of Nimaichand and Keinya Government High School, Thoubal Wangmataba, following an inspection conducted on February 18, 2026, under its “Campaign for Total Education.”
In a press statement issued by its Information and Publicity Secretary, Serto Rengneier Kom, AMSU stated that the inspection was carried out with the objective of strengthening discipline and quality in the student community. The school, a full-fledged government high school with Classes I to X established prior to Manipur attaining statehood, is currently functioning without a regular Head Master, with the post being managed on an in-charge basis.
According to the statement, while teachers have been attending regularly and conducting classes, the school’s infrastructure is in a deteriorated condition. The building is old and poorly maintained, with cracked walls, damaged floors and unsafe structural features. Classrooms are insufficient to accommodate the existing student strength, compelling teachers to partition available rooms to manage classes from I to X.
The school also lacks a dedicated practical room for science subjects.
Although separate toilets for boys and girls are available, the boys’ toilet is reportedly unusable due to poor maintenance. The union further highlighted the acute shortage of subject teachers, particularly in Mathematics, Social Science, Optional subjects and Manipuri, terming it a major concern in a school with substantial enrolment.
The statement also noted that the school authority had submitted several applications to the concerned departments regarding infrastructure gaps and staff shortages, but no effective measures have been taken so far.
