The All Manipur Students’ Union organised a felicitation ceremony for the student leaders elected in the recently held students’ elections of Manipur University, Dhanamanjuri University and its affiliated colleges on Sunday. The programme, which was held in conjunction with the Ningol Chakkouba celebration at the AMSU headquarters on the DM University campus, brought together newly elected representatives to recognise their roles and responsibilities for the coming year.
Addressing the gathering as a guest, Director of Information and Public Relations, Ngangom Uttam, said election victories are to be treated as “only the first step” toward meaningful leadership. He reminded the new student leaders that their success will be measured by their commitment to student welfare and their ability to uphold the duties entrusted to them.
Uttam also encouraged the youthful leaders to maintain a healthy balance between activism, academic responsibilities and future career goals. Sustainable leadership, he said, was all about integrity, transparency and openness to constructive suggestions. He also called upon student organisations to remain neutral, prioritise dialogue over division and not become tools in the hands of influential individuals.
Stressing on the need for capacity-building, Uttam underscored the requirement for regular training programmes in areas related to financial literacy and said that Manipur continues to remain weak in that field. He called for greater unity among the civil bodies and genuine cohesion, which can only come when organisations adopt collective and fair systems for choosing leaders rather than letting it be dominated by a single individual.
Another highlight was the interactive session of the AMSU leaders with the student representatives on strengthening student movements and responsible leadership in all universities and colleges within the state’s jurisdiction.
