Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS) has strongly objected to the appointment of Prof. Ganga Prasad Prasain as Vice-Chancellor in-charge of Manipur University, alleging that the decision violates provisions of the Manipur University Statutes, 2005.
In a statement issued by Secretary General Oinam Amarjit, AIMS stated that the Ministry of Education, Government of India, appointed Prof. Prasain through an order dated May 14, 2026, with the approval of the President of India in her capacity as Visitor of the university.
The organisation alleged that the appointment was contrary to Statute 2(6) of the Manipur University Statutes, which provides that in the absence of a regular Vice-Chancellor, the responsibility should be assigned to the Pro Vice-Chancellor or the senior-most professor of the university. AIMS pointed out that since the university currently has no Pro Vice-Chancellor, the charge should have been given to the senior-most professor.
AIMS stated that bypassing statutory provisions undermines transparency, institutional autonomy and the integrity of university administration. It further warned that such decisions could create administrative instability and erode public confidence in higher education institutions.
The organisation demanded immediate reconsideration of the appointment process and urged the authorities concerned to ensure a fair and lawful mechanism in accordance with the university statutes.
