Imphal/Jiribam, Nov 10:
In a series of violent attacks, armed Kuki militants targeted Meitei civilians in Imphal East district this morning, striking the villages of Thamnapokpi and Sabungkhok shortly after killing a 34-year-old female farmer in Saiton, Bishnupur district, yesterday. This latest wave of violence also included a coordinated assault on Mongbung Meitei Village in Jiribam district, where Kuki and Hmar militants launched an organized offensive last evening.
During the confrontation in Thamnapokpi, a personnel from the Maha Regiment sustained an arm injury from a gunshot as he retaliated against the militants. Reports indicate that around 9:30 a.m., the militants initiated their attack by firing three RPGs towards farmers working in the paddy fields, followed by rounds of gunfire. The exchange continued until approximately 11 a.m. when a joint force composed of the Maha Regiment, BSF, and state forces intervened. Simultaneously, militants reportedly fired gunshots and launched bombs at Sabungkhok, Sanasabi, and Yangangpokpi, further intensifying the unrest.
In Jiribam district, a coordinated nighttime assault on Mongbung Meitei Village began around 8:30 p.m., featuring heavy gunfire and locally made explosives that caused significant property damage and left residents fearing for their lives. Witnesses recounted how militants approached from multiple directions, firing indiscriminately for several hours. Local sources estimate that approximately 60 bombs were detonated, adding to the gravity of the incident and raising concerns about the heightened violence in the region.
Following the attack, many villagers fled their homes and sought shelter at a nearby security camp in Mongbung village. “The attacks have been relentless,” a local resident said, describing the harrowing experience of living under constant threat. “Last night was particularly terrifying.” Families in the area are struggling with fear and uncertainty as they cope with the impact of the violence on their community.
The assault on Mongbung occurred shortly after a combing operation by security forces aimed at maintaining order in the region. Despite these efforts, the latest incident underscores the persistent instability in Jiribam, where militant attacks have grown increasingly frequent.
An elderly resident voiced her fear and frustration, stating, “The use of bombs by the militants is intolerable. We appeal to the Government of Manipur to take this matter seriously and ensure our safety.” Her plea reflects the mounting distress among villagers who feel increasingly vulnerable amid ongoing violence.
Reports indicate that similar militant attacks have occurred in other areas within Jiribam district, with the situation continuing to evolve.
