The Indo-Japan Friendship Association, Manipur (IJFAM) today commemorated the 80th Hiroshima Day at Loktak Hall, Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, Imphal, with a solemn function aimed at promoting peace and remembering the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
The event was graced by Kh. Ibomcha, MLA of Lamlai Assembly Constituency, as the Chief Guest. Retired IPS officer Sarangthem Manaobi (Khoiranthaba) attended as Guest of Honour, while Ningthoujam Kumar Meetei, Vice-President of IJFAM, presided over the programme. Rajeshwar Yumnam was present as Special Guest.
The programme began with the arrival of dignitaries followed by a brief cultural presentation and the observance of a two-minute silence in memory of the victims of the atomic bombings and the martyrs who laid down their lives for the integrity of Manipur.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Kh. Ibomcha highlighted the devastating impact of nuclear warfare and stressed the importance of global disarmament and peaceful coexistence. He lauded the efforts of IJFAM in building cultural and people-to-people ties between Manipur and Japan.
Other speakers included Khoisnam Tokyo Meetei, a member of IJFAM and International Book of Record holder; Irungbam Mangan Singh, Secretary of IJFAM and Principal of the Centre for Japanese Language Studies; and Dr. Ksh. Subadani Devi, recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar. All echoed the need to educate the younger generation about the consequences of war and the value of peace.
Special Guest Rajeshwor Yumnam also addressed the gathering, calling for deeper cross-cultural understanding and sustained efforts in peace-building.
