The inaugural function of the 7th Khundongbam Brojendro Theatre Festival was held today at the Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy, Imphal, organized by the Khundongbam Brojendro Cultural Trust. The festival opened with a floral tribute to the portrait of the late Khundongbam Brojendro, a legendary figure in Manipuri theatre whose work has left a lasting impact on the state’s cultural landscape.
The programme commenced with the arrival of Chief Guest and President H. Gyanprakash, IAS, Commissioner of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur, and Dr. R.K. Nimai, IAS (Retd). Both dignitaries lauded the efforts of the Cultural Trust in honoring Brojendro’s legacy and in promoting theatre as a medium of artistic expression and cultural preservation.
Khundongbam Brojendro, widely regarded as a pioneer in Manipuri theatre, dedicated his life to advancing performing arts in the state. He was instrumental in reviving traditional plays, mentoring young actors, and integrating classical Manipuri art forms into contemporary theatre. His work not only enriched the cultural fabric of Manipur but also ensured that younger generations remain connected to their artistic heritage.
The festival, now in its seventh edition, brings together theatre troupes, artists, and cultural enthusiasts from across Manipur. Through performances, workshops, and interactive sessions, the event seeks to celebrate Brojendro’s contributions and sustain the rich traditions of Manipuri theatre. Organizers emphasized that such initiatives are crucial in preserving the state’s cultural identity while inspiring emerging artists to continue his mission.
