Imphal, Dec 21:
Union Home Minister Amit Shah presided over the 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) at Pragna Bhavan, Agartala. The event witnessed participation from Chief Ministers and officials from the northeastern states.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his optimism about the session, stating, “The 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council has kicked off in Agartala, under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShahJi. I am confident that the discussions and resolutions from this plenary will pave the way for enhanced cooperation and progress, ensuring a brighter future for the people of the entire Northeast.”
Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah highlighted the transformative efforts led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the region, citing the signing of 20 peace accords over the past decade. These agreements have facilitated the surrender of 9,000 armed militants, significantly contributing to peace and stability in the northeast.
Amit Shah asserted the need for the police to adopt a new approach in a post-insurgency era. “The police has fought insurgency in the northeast for the past four decades. As insurgency has now ended, we need to change the approach of the force to ensure people get justice within three years of lodging FIRs,” he stated.
He also highlighted the government’s focus on promoting organic agriculture in the region. “The Centre has constituted the National Organic Corporation Ltd (NOCL) to boost organic farming. I urge all northeastern Chief Ministers to sign agreements with NOCL for packaging, marketing, and exporting organic products,” he added.
Highlighting infrastructure development, Shah revealed that the central government has invested Rs. 81,000 crore in rail connectivity and Rs. 41,000 crore in road projects across the northeast, reflecting its commitment to enhancing connectivity and boosting regional development.
