48-hour strike intensifies over youths’ abduction, paralyzes State

IT News
Imphal, Oct 2:

The 48-hour general strike called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) to demand the release of two abducted youths in Manipur intensified on October 2, spreading across the state. Initially concentrated in Thoubal district, the strike has now expanded, affecting daily life in multiple districts.
The bandh, which began at 3 am on October 1, has paralyzed transportation, business, and government services. Major markets in Thoubal, including Lilong Keithel, Thoubal Keithel, Kakwa and others, were shut down. Banks and government offices in the district headquarters also remained closed, while public transportation was unavailable. However, essential services, such as medical and emergency services, along with students and religious functions, were exempt from the strike.
JAC spokesperson Irom Bimol warned of escalating protests if the state and central governments fail to secure the safe release of the two youths within the 48-hour deadline. He noted that despite promises from the authorities since September 27, there has been no progress. The public had staged a peaceful protest in Thoubal in anticipation of the youths’ release, but frustrations are growing as the deadline approaches.
The strike has also gained momentum in other districts, including Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Kakching, where roads and highways have been blocked by protesters. Women in Thoubal blocked National Highway 102, while in Imphal East, tyres were burned to prevent traffic.
The youths were abducted last week in Kangpokpi district while on their way to a recruitment test, with one already rescued and two still missing. The JAC has vowed to continue the agitation until the remaining youths are freed.
