Tensions flared today between Hunphun and Hungpung villages in Ukhrul district, driven by a long-standing land dispute. Reports suggest the conflict escalated into violence, with an exchange of gunfire leaving multiple individuals injured. The situation remains volatile. Report reaching here said that at least 3 persons including a personnel 6th Manipur Rifles died in the violence.
MPCC blames State Home Department for Ukhrul incident
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has expressed deep concern over the violent incident in Ukhrul, where three individuals, including two civilians and a police officer, lost their lives. MPCC President K. Meghachandra, addressing media at Congress Bhavan, described the violence as “unfortunate” and conveyed his party’s sorrow. He noted that the tragedy occurred on International Non-Violence Day, a day observed globally to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy, making the incident even more disheartening.
Meghachandra criticized the state home department and the district administration for their failure to prevent the crisis. He pointed out the lack of timely intelligence regarding the land dispute that led to the conflict and expressed disappointment over the occurrence of violence despite the significant presence of security forces in the state.
In response, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Ukhrul issued a prohibition order, effective from 9:30 AM, restricting the movement of residents in both villages. The order also bans any activities that could disturb the fragile law and order situation. These restrictions will remain in place until further notice to prevent further escalation.
Additionally, local authorities have suspended internet and mobile data services in Ukhrul district starting at 1:20 PM for a day to curb misinformation. Additional security forces have been deployed to the area to maintain peace, and local officials are monitoring the situation closely. Further updates are expected as developments unfold.
The conflict intensified when Hunphun Village Authority objected to a social work event organized by the Tangkhul Hunphun Youth and Students Organization (THYSO), sparking concerns of unrest. Ukhrul’s Superintendent of Police had raised alarms over the potential breach of public safety, citing the ongoing territorial dispute.
MLAs appeal for restraint and peace amid Ukhrul violence
In the wake of the violent incident in Ukhrul, which claimed the lives of two civilians and a police officer, local leaders have issued a heartfelt appeal for peace. Leishiyo Keishing, MLA of Phungyar AC, Khashim Vashum, Minister of Transport and Veterinary & Animal Husbandry, and Ram Muivah, MLA of Ukhrul AC, released a joint statement urging the community to refrain from further violence.
The leaders expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, calling on the people to remember their shared history and familial bonds. They stressed that the villages affected by the violence are not just neighbors but are linked by blood, history, and love. The MLAs reminded the public of the dreams, hardships, and joys shared by their ancestors, and appealed for these bonds to remain unbroken.
In their plea, they urged the community to pause and reflect, emphasizing that no victory can be found in the suffering of fellow citizens. They called for unity, reminding everyone that every life lost is a collective wound to the community.
The statement also called for restraint, asking that compassion and reason prevail over anger. The MLAs underscored the importance of maintaining peace for the sake of future generations and urged the public to seek a resolution through dialogue. They extended their deepest condolences to the families of the victims and expressed their hope for peace to return to the region.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate invoked emergency powers under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, to impose the restriction. Exemptions are in place for government officials maintaining law and order and those providing essential services. Special permission will be required for gatherings, such as processions for marriages or funerals.
Executive Magistrates Hanyo Luke Rungsung and Riamei Jangmei have been assigned to ensure compliance in the Thingrasa and Ngaphar areas. The situation continues to be closely monitored to ensure public safety.
