Three men from Manipur were arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police and Kamrup Police after a large consignment of Yaba tablets and heroin was seized from a vehicle intercepted at Amingaon on the outskirts of Guwahati.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the joint team intercepted a Tata Nexon (AS-11-AA-6800) allegedly transporting narcotics from Kakching district in Manipur to a district in lower Assam.
According to the Chief Public Relations Officer’s office of Assam Police, the arrested persons have been identified as Kh. Tabish (24) of Lamding Wanjing Cherapur, Kakching district, who was driving the vehicle; Thekcham Avinash Singh (41) of Khongjom Sapam, Thoubal district, the co-driver; and Nongmaithem Biswajit (38) of Sekmaijin Bazar, Mayang Imphal, Imphal West district, a passenger.
During a search of the vehicle, police recovered 50,000 Yaba tablets containing methamphetamine, weighing approximately 5 kg (excluding packaging), concealed inside specially fabricated secret compartments. The team also seized five soap cases containing 67.5 grams of heroin (excluding packaging).
Police estimated the street value of the seized contraband at around Rs. 12.5 crore, while the CID assessed its value at approximately Rs. 7.5 crore.
A case has been registered and the three accused have been taken into custody. Investigation is underway to trace the source of the narcotics, identify the intended recipients and uncover the inter-state trafficking network linked to the seizure.
