The Campaign for Just & Fair Delimitation (JFD) has served an ultimatum and reminder to the Governor of Manipur and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, demanding immediate steps to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) to identify illegal immigrants in the state.
In a statement issued by Kangjam Maharabi, Secretary (IPR), JFD, the campaign committee alleged that the influx of illegal immigrants has led to demographic imbalance in Manipur and contributed to the prevailing unrest. It claimed that the violence which began on May 3, 2023, initially targeting the Meitei community, has now spread to affect the Naga community as well, resulting in loss of lives, displacement of thousands of people and widespread insecurity.
The committee stated that it has repeatedly submitted memoranda and representations to both the State and Central Governments and has also organised public awareness campaigns highlighting the need for an NRC update to identify illegal immigrants. It said the latest ultimatum was issued as a reminder for the authorities to act on its long-pending demands.
JFD recalled that at a public meeting attended by representatives of several civil society organisations at the Manipur Press Club on July 26, 2026, it had resolved to launch an intensified agitation if the State Government failed to adopt a resolution on NRC updation before the commencement of the Housing Census on August 17 and the Population Census scheduled to begin on February 1 next year.
The committee warned that if the government does not pass a resolution on NRC updation by the night of August 6, it will launch a series of intensified democratic agitations from August 7.
JFD reiterated its demand for immediate NRC updation in Manipur, stating that identifying illegal immigrants is essential for safeguarding the demographic balance and ensuring lasting peace and stability in the state.
