Imphal, Sept 15:
A 24-hour general strike, called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in response to the Kakwa Naorem Leikai incident, has severely disrupted normal life in Imphal today. Shops, offices, and other economic establishments were forced to shut down as part of the bandh, leaving streets largely deserted.
The strike was called after a tragic incident in which an unborn child died during police action against protesters. JAC Convenor Naorem William revealed that the nine-month-old fetus belonged to Naorem ongbi Sanjita, a local woman critically injured when security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse protesters. The protests were sparked by demands for the unified command to be handed over to the Manipur Government to counter alleged narco-terrorist activities.
Naorem William further shared details of the medical situation, explaining that the JAC members consulted with gynecologist Dr. Usharani, who clarified that Naorem Sanjita had been on ventilator support at RIMS hospital when she delivered the stillborn child. The mother remains in critical condition in the ICU, still on ventilator support, according to the doctors treating her.
The JAC has called the strike to protest the excessive use of force by security personnel and urged the public to show solidarity by supporting the shutdown. The situation continues to draw attention to the larger issue of handling protests in the state and the actions of the security forces.
