Imphal, Sept 15:
Unidentified individuals hurled a bomb at the residence of Manipur’s Veterinary and Animal Husbandry and Transport Minister, Khashim Vashum, in Hamleikhong, Ukhrul district on Saturday evening. The bomb exploded around 8:40 PM, causing widespread panic in the area.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported, as Minister Vashum, a member of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) allied with the BJP, was not at home during the explosion. He was residing at his official quarters in Imphal at the time of the attack.
Local law enforcement responded swiftly, cordoning off the area and launching an investigation into the incident. Ukhrul police have yet to identify any suspects, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from various community organizations. The Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL), the Tangkhul Youth Council, and the Northern Raphei Students’ Union (NRSU) have all released statements denouncing the attack as a “cowardly act” that threatens the peace and security of Ukhrul town. They called for a thorough investigation and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice swiftly.
The Raphei Katamnao Long (RKL) and the Thawaijao Hungpung Young Students’ Organisation (THYSO) have also condemned the bombing, describing it as an affront to the community’s values of peace, stability, and respect for dialogue. They urged authorities to take concrete steps to prevent further violence and maintain order.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are treating the incident as a priority to ensure the safety of the minister and the general public.
