Two individuals from Manipur were reportedly arrested near Jowai in West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, following a joint operation targeting drug trafficking into the state. According to police sources, acting on credible intelligence, a TATA vehicle bearing registration number ML05 K 2315, traveling from Khliehriat to Jowai, was intercepted and thoroughly searched, which led to the discovery of a substantial heroin haul and foreign currency, resulting in the detention of the suspects.
The operation was said to have been led by Jason Mairom, Additional Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills District, in coordination with the State Anti-Narcotic Task Force. The arrested individuals were identified as Chuchung Serto, a resident of Nakhunjang, Kangpokpi, Manipur, and Thanggin Towthang, a resident of Songpehh, Churachandpur, Manipur.
Police reportedly recovered 50 soap boxes containing a total of 512.63 grams of heroin hidden in a secret compartment within the vehicle’s running board. The narcotics, valued at approximately Rs.2.5 crore, were said to have tested positive under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. In addition, authorities allegedly seized Rs.6,775 in Indian currency, 3,000 in South Korean Won, 500 in Kazakhstan Tenge, 10 kyat notes in Burmese currency, and two mobile handsets from the suspects.
It was stated that a case under the NDPS Act is being registered and that police are carrying out further investigations to trace possible supply chain links and larger cross-border networks. The Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills, reportedly urged citizens to remain vigilant and to assist authorities in curbing narcotics-related activities in the region.
