Bridging the gap: India Cine Hub empowers Northeast Indian filmmakers

Imphal, August 16:

Northeast India, a region known for its stunning landscapes, diverse cultures, and unique narratives, is set to witness a cinematic renaissance, thanks to the India Cine Hub (ICH), an initiative by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. The ICH, which was initially established to support international filmmakers, has now extended its services to Indian filmmakers, opening a new chapter of opportunities for the region’s independent talent.
Independent filmmakers in Northeast India, often facing challenges like limited infrastructure and financial constraints, now have a powerful ally in the ICH. By providing a single-window clearance system for filming permissions and access to location information, the ICH is streamlining the previously cumbersome process of film production in the region.
The ICH portal offers a centralized platform for filmmakers to apply for permissions from various central and state agencies, integrating state-level systems or providing a common application form for states without online processing. Northeast India’s scenic beauty and vibrant culture have always been an untapped resource for filmmakers.
The ICH’s GIS-based location directory features geo-tagged filming locations across the country, showcasing its diverse landscapes, and providing detailed information, according to NFDC. This will undoubtedly attract more productions to the region, boosting local tourism and creating job opportunities for the region’s talented youth. Beyond streamlining permissions, the ICH facilitates access to government incentives and resources.
Filmmakers can now connect with potential collaborators, financial institutions, and other industry stakeholders through the platform. Schemes like the Film Finance Scheme of Assam, which provides financial assistance at various stages of production, will further empower filmmakers from the Northeast.
The India Cine Hub, by empowering independent filmmakers and fostering collaboration, is set to play a pivotal role in the resurgence of Northeast Indian cinema. By leveraging the platform effectively, filmmakers from the region can overcome the challenges that have historically hampered their growth and finally bring their unique stories to a global audience. As I&B Secretary Sanjay Jaju emphasizes, Centre-State collaboration is crucial for the growth of India’s creative economy. The ICH serves as a shining example of this collaboration in action, creating a level playing field for filmmakers from all corners of India, including the often under represented Northeast.
