The Call for probe against CM by 10 Kuki MLAs: A Malicious and Desperate Attempt

In the vibrant democracy that is India, every citizen—regardless of caste, creed, gender, or economic status—enjoys the right to voice concerns against any misconduct by those in power, even if the person in question holds the highest office in government. This liberal aspect of Indian democracy is a cornerstone of the nation’s commitment to freedom and justice. However, this very freedom is sometimes exploited by individuals who use it not for the greater good but to sabotage the careers of those in power, often without introspection about their own faults. This troubling dynamic is evident in the recent complaints lodged by ten Kuki MLAs against Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh.
The Kuki MLAs have demanded a probe into what they allege is the Chief Minister’s role in perpetuating the prolonged crisis in Manipur, which has been festering for over 15 months. While it is true that Chief Minister Biren Singh has struggled to contain the violence and has admitted to intelligence failures on several occasions, the accusations against him are not as straightforward as they seem. The Imphal Times acknowledges that the Chief Minister bears responsibility for the current state of affairs, particularly as he also oversees the Home Department. However, the portrayal of Biren Singh as a leader serving only specific communities is both misleading and dangerous.
Throughout this crisis, which has pushed Manipur to the brink, none of the 40 MLAs from the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly have publicly advocated for the division of the state. Yet, the ten Kuki-Zo MLAs, two of whom still hold cabinet positions, have consistently sought to stoke division within Manipur. Their rhetoric and actions appear to be driven by an agenda that goes beyond the interests of the people they claim to represent. Indeed, it is difficult to ignore the possibility that these MLAs are advancing the cause of illegal immigrants under the influence of Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists. By exploiting every available means to defame and undermine Chief Minister Biren Singh, they have engaged in a campaign of baseless propaganda aimed at destabilizing his government.
Recently, this campaign has reached a new low with the circulation of a viral audio clip that allegedly defames the Chief Minister. The clip, which has spread like wildfire on social media, is purportedly doctored and intended to tarnish Biren Singh’s reputation as a last-ditch effort to remove him from office. The state police have launched an investigation into the matter, and the truth will likely soon come to light, exposing those who are behind this malicious act. If the clip is indeed found to be falsified, it will underscore the lengths to which these MLAs are willing to go to achieve their aims, even if it means sabotaging the image of the state’s leader.
It is important to clarify that this editorial is not an attempt to absolve the Manipur government of its failures in handling the ongoing crisis. The government’s inability to control the violence over the past 15 months is a serious issue that warrants scrutiny and criticism. However, the actions of the ten Kuki-Zo MLAs must also be condemned for what they are: a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the real causes of the violence and to dethrone a Chief Minister who, despite his shortcomings, is not solely to blame for the current situation.
What Manipur needs at this critical juncture is not more political infighting or the spread of malicious propaganda. Instead, what is required is decisive action from the Manipur Pradesh BJP, particularly against the seven BJP MLAs who are conspiring against their own leader. The party must take a firm stand against those who are attempting to destabilize the state for their own political gain. At a time when Manipur is in desperate need of strong and united leadership, the focus should be on restoring peace and stability, not on tearing each other down.
The people of Manipur deserve more than mere lip service from their leaders. They deserve a government that is committed to resolving the crisis, not one that is consumed by internal divisions and power struggles. It is time for the BJP to put an end to the distractions and take the necessary steps to address the root causes of the violence. Only then can Manipur begin to heal and move forward as a united state.
