Tension runs high in Kumbi area of Bishnupur district this morning as a significant number of local women confronted the Indian Army following the arrest of 11 village defenders. The incident unfolded when a convoy of the Maha Regiment of the Indian Army attempted to apprehend the defenders. In response, the army resorted to firing rounds of gunshots into the air in an effort to disperse the women. However, the women remained steadfast, defying the army’s actions and blocking their path while demanding the release of the detained villagers and their weapons. A video capturing the confrontation has since gone viral on social media, showing an army vehicle advancing toward a group of women, resulting in one woman losing her footing and falling.
Report reaching here said that a team from the Maha Regiment of the Indian Army apprehended 11 village defenders in the vicinity of Churachandpur district. The defenders, tasked with safeguarding the local populace amid fears of potential attacks by Kuki armed groups, were taken into custody along with their weapons. Additionally, the army seized two Gypsy vehicles belonging to the defenders during the operation conducted at around 2.30 am today morning. The incident has heightened tensions in the area, prompting concerns among locals regarding security and stability. Later, the Village defenders were released.
Amid escalating tensions, a growing number of women rushed to the Kumbi Police Station around 9 am following reports of the Indian Army’s arrival to hand over seized weapons and vehicles. With the situation deteriorating and the women standing firm in their demand for proper handling of the confiscated weapons, MLA Robindro of Thanga AC and the Superintendent of Police for Bishnupur district swiftly intervened. Subsequently, a meeting was convened involving the Commandant of the Maha Regiment, the Bishnupur District SP, MLA Robindro, and the protesting women, leading to a resolution being reached. The weapons were later surrendered at the Bishnupur District Police Station, while the two seized Gypsy vehicles were released.
