The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) observed the 95th Martyrdom Day of Haipou Jadonang at its Council Headquarters, General Headquarters, battalions and tactical units across Assam, Manipur and Nagaland on Saturday.
The occasion was marked by military salutes, tributes and candle-lighting ceremonies. The ZUF said the day holds significance for the Zeliangrong community as it provides an opportunity to remember the resistance of their forefathers against British colonial rule.
In a statement, the ZUF recalled the contributions and sacrifice of Haipou Jadonang, who was captured and hanged on August 29, 1931, for his resistance to British rule in the Zeliangrong areas.
The organisation said Jadonang’s courage and sacrifice continue to inspire the Zeliangrong people and described him as a patriot and heroic leader whose legacy remains an important part of their history.
The ZUF further alleged that the Government of India has continued to delay recognition of Jadonang’s contribution to the freedom movement.
It demanded that Haipou Jadonang be accorded due recognition and appropriate awards as one of India’s freedom fighters.
The organisation also urged the Government of India to acknowledge the contribution of the Zeliangrong people to the country’s freedom struggle, stating that their role in the making of independent India was no less significant than that of other communities.
