Seven civil society organisations from Torbung, Phougakchao Ikhai and Kwakta have strongly condemned the late-night firing incident at Torbung Maning on July 3, alleging that the attack was carried out by “suspected Kuki narco-terrorists.”
In a joint public notification issued today, the organisations stated that the firing, which reportedly occurred at around 11:20 pm, endangered civilians and created fear and tension among residents of the area.
The signatories claimed that the incident was not an isolated case, alleging that Torbung and nearby villages have repeatedly witnessed similar incidents of violence, intimidation and armed attacks. They expressed dissatisfaction over what they described as the failure of the government and the concerned authorities to take effective measures despite repeated appeals from the public and the deployment of Central security forces.
The organisations further alleged that the continued inaction of the authorities had emboldened anti-social and anti-national elements to carry out repeated attacks on civilians. They also called for action against the security personnel responsible for preventing such incidents, claiming that the attack occurred despite the presence of security forces in the area.
Demanding immediate reinforcement of security arrangements and strict action against those responsible for the firing, the organisations gave the authorities a 24-hour deadline to respond.
They warned that if no action is taken within the stipulated period, they, in consultation with the public, would launch an indefinite economic blockade along the Tiddim Road as part of what they described as a democratic mass agitation. They further stated that any untoward situation arising out of the proposed protest would be the responsibility of the government and the concerned authorities.
The joint statement was issued by the Torbung United Club, Social Youth Development Organisation, Phougakchao Ikhai, Lamthabung Area Voluntary Association, Youth Development Club, Phougakchao Ikhai Maning Leikai, Youth Development Organisation, Phougakchao Ikhai Awang Leikai, Ibudhou Thougalloi Youth Development Organisation, and Youth and Social Development Organisation, Kwakta Moirang Turel Mapal.
