The Wheelchair Basketball Association, Manipur (WBAM) has announced that Manipur’s Irengbam Ritu Chanu has been selected to represent India in the 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball event at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
In a statement, WBAM General Secretary Md. Yunus Khan said Ritu Chanu will attend the national coaching camp organised by the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India (WBFI) at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Training Centre for Disability Sports in Gwalior until July 20. The Indian contingent is scheduled to depart from Delhi for Glasgow on July 21.
According to the association, Ritu Chanu has become the first athlete from Manipur to represent India in a disability sport at the Commonwealth Games, describing the achievement as a proud milestone for both the State and the disabled sporting community.
WBAM members, coaches and her family gathered at Imphal International Airport to wish her success before her departure.
The association appealed to the people of Manipur to extend their encouragement and blessings to Ritu Chanu as she prepares to compete on the international stage.
The statement also noted that Ritu Chanu had participated in two previous national coaching camps and is currently attending her third. It added that although she initially faced financial constraints, WBAM President L. Dhaneshwor Singh extended support to enable her participation. The association further appealed to the State Government to extend greater encouragement and support to para-athletes in Manipur.
