Ukhrul, May 27:
In a significant push to strengthen sports infrastructure in Ukhrul district, MLA Ram Muivah has urged the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to establish a Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centre and an Astro Turf football ground in the district under the Khelo India programme.
Ram Muivah met Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse on May 24 and discussed the proposal aimed at developing Ukhrul into a major sports hub in the Northeast. According to the MLA, the Union Minister responded positively and appreciated the sporting potential of the district.
The proposal highlighted the lack of adequate sports infrastructure despite Ukhrul’s consistent contribution in producing talented footballers and athletes at national and international levels. Supporting documents from the Sports Authority of India’s North Eastern Regional Centre, Imphal, recommending a SAI SAG Centre and Sports Complex in Ukhrul, were also enclosed.
Located around 84 km from Imphal, Ukhrul district experiences prolonged rainy seasons, forcing athletes to train on muddy grounds due to the absence of proper facilities. Despite these challenges, the district continues to produce outstanding sportspersons.
Ram Muivah stated that establishment of a synthetic football turf, SAI Training Centre and modern sports complex would create opportunities for youths from remote hill areas to compete at higher levels.
