The Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891, Martyrs and Freedom Fighters, Kangleipak, Manipur observed its 8th Foundation Day at the Manipur Press Club yesterday.
The programme was attended by social worker Ashang Kashar as Chief Guest, while Chairman of the Committee Joychandra Konthoujam presided over the function. Editor of Imphal Times Rinku Khumukcham, Dr. Reheijuddin Sheikh, Principal of Moirang College, Ch. Lalpu Aimol, Advisor of Aimol Tribe Union Manipur, and Serto Ahao Kom, President of Kom Union Manipur attended the event as Guests of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Ashang Kashar highlighted the need to remember the martyrs and heroes of the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891. He criticised what he termed as “pseudo-nationalists,” particularly politicians who, he said, have failed to follow the path of the brave ancestors from different communities of the state who had confronted the powerful British colonial forces.
Dr. Reheijuddin Sheikh appreciated the efforts of the Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 and noted that historical accounts confirm the participation of Meitei Pangal in the war against the British. He thanked the committee for recognising their contribution.
Ch. Lalpu Aimol and Serto Ahao Kom expressed concern regarding the protection and preservation of their respective communities, pointing out that their populations are comparatively small.
Chairman Joychandra Konthoujam said that in order to protect and preserve Manipur and its people, it is necessary for the people to have a deeper understanding of the state’s geography and history. He stated that Manipur was built and protected by the sacrifices of the forefathers and that it is the responsibility of the present generation to safeguard and carry forward that legacy with respect and pride.
He further said that while Manipur is a state within India and its people are citizens of India, it is important to understand the provisions of the Constitution of India. At the same time, he stressed the need to remain vigilant about policies that could weaken Manipur. He observed that divisive policies have often affected the unity of the state and urged the people of Manipur to remain alert and work collectively for the protection, development and unity of the land.
Joychandra Konthoujam also called upon the people to prioritise the protection of the motherland and the welfare of its people above political interests, stating that excessive politicisation could harm the unity and future of the state.
