Northeast indigenous leaders unite in Manipur to mark World Indigenous Day 2025

Indigenous Leaders and representatives from across Northeast India gathered at the City Convention Centre in Imphal on Saturday to observe the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2025 under the theme “Indigenous People’s Right to Self-Determination: A Pathway for Food Security and Sovereignty.” The event was hosted by the Indigenous People’s Forum, Manipur (IPFM) under the aegis of the North East Indigenous People’s Forum (NEIPF).
The celebration brought together prominent political leaders, community representatives, and cultural performers, highlighting the shared challenges and aspirations of Indigenous peoples in the region. Chief guest Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma, Head of the Royal House of Tripura and founder of Tipra Motha Party, delivered the keynote address. Guests of Honour included NPF Legislature Party leader Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, former leader of UNLF RK Sanayaima and Ranjit Debbarma, among others.
During the function, the World Indigenous Day 2025 Declaration was unanimously adopted by the Indigenous Peoples of Northeast India. The declaration reaffirmed their collective stand against illegal immigration, which they said threatens ancestral lands, distinct identities, and demographic integrity. It also renewed their unity in combating illicit drugs, which they warned are destroying youth and undermining society, while upholding the right to self-determination.
The event began with a flag hoisting, followed by a welcome song at the Adimjati Girls Hostel. Cultural performances from Kasom Khullen Village and the Needy Home Academy, folk songs by Mangka Laihui and Chiru artistes, and a “Sundry Cultural Assortment” showcased the diverse heritage of the region. Special appearances were made by the Manipur Ningols Ministry and other invited guests.
Signatories to the declaration included NEIPF Chairman Anup Chetia, NIPF President Dr. Lina Tlang, leaders from Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur, and NEIPF executives. They pledged to safeguard ancestral lands, cultural heritage, and the future of Indigenous communities, committing to “one Indigenous people, one voice, and one movement” for dignity and survival.
IPFM President in Charge Rohan Philam stressed that the day was not merely ceremonial but a call to action for unity and resilience. Participants urged governments to recognise Indigenous rights and support grassroots initiatives that preserve cultural identity and ensure sustainable livelihoods.
The programme concluded with a closing song and words of gratitude, underlining the solidarity among Northeast India’s Indigenous communities in their ongoing struggles for recognition, rights, and justice.
