Imphal, March 23:
The 12th Anniversary of the establishment of the Manipur High Court was observed in Imphal on Saturday, with dignitaries stressing the role of justice in fostering peace and development in the state.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, speaking at the event, expressed hope for the swift progress of the peace process in Manipur, which has been affected by ethnic violence since May 202 3. “I pray for rapidness in the ongoing peace process in Manipur so that the state can progress and contribute to Viksit Bharat,” he said.
The event was attended by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and a delegation of Supreme Court judges, led by Justice B R Gavai. The visiting judges had earlier toured relief camps and interacted with internally displaced persons, assessing the impact of the ongoing crisis.
As part of their visit, the Supreme Court delegation also virtually inaugurated a legal services camp, a medical camp, and a legal aid clinic from the Mini Secretariat at Lamka in Churachandpur district.
Justice Gavai, addressing the gathering, urged people to work together in restoring peace. “This is a difficult phase, but with the collective efforts of the executive, legislature, and judiciary, Manipur will overcome these challenges,” he stated.
The Manipur High Court, since its inception, has played a crucial role in upholding justice and legal rights in the state. The anniversary celebration served as a reminder of the judiciary’s responsibility in ensuring stability and strengthening the rule of law in Manipur.
Since May 2023, over 250 people have lost their lives, and thousands have been displaced in the ethnic violence between the Imphal Valley-based Meitei community and the Kuki-Zo groups in the surrounding hills. With renewed calls for peace, leaders at the event expressed optimism that legal and governmental efforts would help bring stability to the state.
