CSOs march against AFSPA and Jiribam killings

IT News
Imphal, Nov 19:

A protest rally has been organised against the reimposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and the recent killings in Jiribam by the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Manipur, the Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF), and the All Manipur Woman Voluntary Organizations. The rally began at Kwakeithel Tiddim Ground and moved towards Keishampat Junction despite curfew restrictions.
The rally was sparked by mounting anger over the killing of six Meitei civilians by Kuki militants in Jiribam on November 11 and the fatal shooting of Senior SP (Operations) Nectar Sanjenbam in the same district. The protesters also demonstrated against the reimposition of AFSPA in six police station areas, a decision that has reignited public outrage over the law’s oppressive history in Manipur.
Addressing the rally, AMUCO President Ph. Nando Luwang condemned AFSPA as a “draconian and black law” that has caused immense suffering in the state. He criticized the decision to reimpose the act, stating, “Reimposing AFSPA will not mitigate the crisis but will deepen the people’s suffering. The authorities must repeal it as soon as possible.” Luwang also blamed the Indian government for creating conditions that have exacerbated violence in the state, urging immediate action to reverse the policy.
Thongam Apabi Leima, representing Poirei Leimarol Apunba Lup, voiced similar opposition, highlighting that AFSPA had previously been repealed due to public resistance. “Reintroducing this act goes against the will of the people of Manipur. It undermines the sacrifices made to secure its abrogation,” she asserted.
The protest escalated into a confrontation when police attempted to stop the rally near Kwakeithel Market. Despite the standoff, protesters managed to advance to Keishampat Junction, where they were halted by the police and other security forces.
