The 8th Thingujam (O) Nganbi Devi Memorial Football Tournament 2026, organised by the Social Workers’ Congress (SWC), concluded today with a closing ceremony held at Khongman.
The tournament, which began on March 22, witnessed participation from 14 teams representing Kshetrigao, Andro, Keirao and Thongju Assembly Constituencies in Imphal East district. Sponsored by the Thingujam (O) Nganbi Devi Memorial Trust, the event aimed at promoting sportsmanship and youth engagement.
In the final match, SWC-A defeated MMC, Mongkhanglambi by 1–0 to lift the championship title.
Attending the closing function as chief guest, RK Meghan, also known as Sanayaima, spoke on the significance of sports, stating that games play a key role not only in physical development but also in shaping discipline, character and mental strength among youth. He observed that sportspersons represent the identity and pride of the state and contribute to unity and social responsibility.
Social scientist Dhanabir Laishram highlighted Manipur’s strong sporting culture and called for greater efforts to identify and nurture young talent. He also expressed concern over the shrinking availability of playgrounds and the decline of full-format football matches.
Thingujam Oxford stressed the importance of teamwork and leadership in sports, while N Phillip noted that popular games like football have contributed significantly to enhancing Manipur’s identity and fostering unity among communities.
SWC president A Birendra lauded the successful organisation of the tournament and its role in encouraging young players.
The closing ceremony concluded with prize distribution. The champions were awarded Rs. 50,000, while the runners-up received Rs. 30,000. The third and fourth place teams were awarded Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively. Cash awards were also presented for Best Discipline Team, Best Player, and Highest Goal Scorer.
