The 38th edition of the N. Hazari and Dr. N. Tombi State Level Polo Tournament is being underway at Mapal Kangjeibung, Imphal, with as many as 38 polo clubs from across the state taking part in the prestigious event. The tournament, organised by the All Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association (AMHRPA), began on October 19 at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung (Imphal Polo Ground) — the oldest polo ground in the world.
The annual tournament stands as one of the most anticipated events in the state’s sporting calendar, bringing together leading players and clubs to celebrate Manipur’s rich polo heritage. Over the years, it has served as a vital platform for grooming new talents while preserving the traditional form of the game, locally known as Sagol Kangjei.
According to the organisers, six best polo players from this state-level competition will be selected to represent Manipur India Team B in the forthcoming Manipur International Invitation Polo Tournament, which will feature top teams from India and abroad.
Officials of AMHRPA said the tournament honours the enduring contributions of late N. Hazari and Dr. N. Tombi, who played instrumental roles in promoting and preserving polo in the state. The ongoing edition is expected to showcase thrilling contests as seasoned and young riders vie for top honours.
