Mine is a life soiled and chafed,
Covered with a dusky sky,
Full of grey and dull clouds
Blocking sunshine of good fortune
From filtering through to my life.
But I’m managing to wade through
The mud of a soggy life,
Clinging to a little sweet hope –
A hope that burns brighter
And brighter every time
My son returns home from school
With a beaming smile on his face.
A hope that in the fulness of time,
The sunshine of good fortune
Will break through the clouds
To fall on my life and then
I’ll break through my poverty.
